Working from home but lacking a dedicated work space, our client was a music teacher offering private piano lessons from her 1960s, detached dwelling in Shenfield. The existing internal configuration required pupils to walk through the house to be taught in the dining room, positioned to the rear of the house.
The brief was to provide inclusive, ancillary accommodation to enable separation of the main living accommodation from propose made space within which the client could teach.
Externally, our proposal positioned a simple, single-storey volume on the front elevation. Owing to the prominent position of the dwelling, at the end of a cul-de-sac, the additional form proposed to provide a degree of symmetry to the frontage. Internally the existing ground floor WC was re-positioned, with the space utilised to provide access to the new music room within the new volume, with a new shower room created at ground floor fulfilling part of the strategic brief.
