What began as a straightforward brief for a double-storey, wrap-around extension and full refurbishment quickly opened up into something more collaborative and ambitious. From the outset, Sachin and Revathi were curious about modern construction methods, renewable energy sources and the quality of their future home. Above all, they were open to ideas and eager to make choices that would work not just for their family now, but for years to come.

So we got to work and together, we explored a range of construction methods that could deliver on performance and sustainability. From CLT to SIPs and traditional timber frame, we weighed up the pros and cons of each, always balancing thermal performance, embodied carbon, and practical buildability. As part of that process, we worked closely with contractors and suppliers to gather outline quotes, helping the clients make informed decisions based not just on aspiration, but on real-world feasibility.

In the background, we were also looking at what low-carbon technologies we could us to bring long-term comfort and low running costs to the home. Together with Mesh Energy we explored everything from MVHR, to solar panels, air source heat pumps and triple glazing.

The final scheme will be built using SIPs from EcoSIPs, offering a high-performance envelope that’s quick to erect and tightly sealed — the perfect foundation for a low-energy home. At the rear, three generous brick arches will frame the open-plan kitchen, dining and family space as it opens onto the garden — a subtle nod to craftsmanship and a moment of wow that we just can’t wait to see take shape on site!
