Alex and Louise approached us when their UPVC conservatory had finally reached the end of its life. Warped frames, peeling finishes and a leaking roof were only part of the problem. Like most conservatories of its era, it performed terribly: overheating in summer, losing heat rapidly in winter and forcing the family to rely on artificial heating and cooling just to make it usable. It also formed an awkward buffer between the kitchen and garden, disconnecting the family from the outdoors and from their children when they played outside.

Because the conservatory had been added without opening up the rear of the house, the kitchen and former dining room remained two dark, inefficient spaces with poor ventilation and limited daylight. For a modern family home, it simply wasn’t fit for purpose.

Our proposal replaces the conservatory with a highly insulated, thermally efficient single-storey extension. High-performance glazing, improved airtightness and carefully oriented openings help regulate temperature naturally, reducing energy demand throughout the year. The new layout unifies the kitchen, dining and living spaces, while large-format windows frame the garden and maintain clear sightlines across the home.

Rather than a seasonal add-on, the extension becomes a stable, comfortable environment in all weather—warm in winter, cool in summer and naturally bright. The project transforms a compromised part of the house into a sustainable heart of the home, delivering better connection, better comfort and a significantly improved environmental footprint.
