Our clients had already been through an earlier design phase when they came to us seeking greater clarity and momentum. Our role was to bring direction, so we began by simplifying.
We removed unnecessary complexity, rationalised elements of the front elevation and refined the internal layout to create a more efficient plan with a clear relationship between kitchen, living spaces and garden. We engaged structural engineers and sought early cost advice to ensure ambition and budget could move together - something we see as essential on projects of this scale within Shenfield’s established residential setting.
As the design evolved, it became clear that without alignment between vision, structure and cost, even the strongest ideas struggle to move forward.
The project ultimately continued under a different architect. It remains, however, an important commission for us - reinforcing something central to how we practise as architects in Shenfield and across Essex:
- Good architecture isn’t defined by scale alone.
- It’s defined by proportion, clarity and confidence in the decisions being made.
Every project refines our process. Measured Ambition strengthened our commitment to early cost alignment, disciplined design development and ensuring aspiration is always grounded in buildable reality.
If you’re considering a substantial extension or reconfiguration on Hutton Mount or elsewhere in Shenfield, we’d be pleased to help you begin with clarity from day one.
