Normanhurst
Hutton, Essex

When Harry and Helena decided to take on Helena’s childhood home, they wanted to make it their own — to turn it into a low-energy, long-term home for their young family, where nothing felt compromised.

Shenfield Hutton Architect

The house already had generous proportions, but the layout needed a rethink. So we got to work reimagining the plan — adding two double-storey side extensions and refurbishing the whole house to create something more balanced, more usable, and more them.

Upstairs, we’ve created a fourth bedroom, reworked the master suite with its own dressing and en-suite, and added a new en-suite and larger family bathroom. Downstairs, the old garage becomes a dedicated study, and we’ve introduced a new WC, utility, and a bright, open-plan kitchen, dining, family and play space — all designed around how a modern family really lives.

At the front, a new entrance and boot-room-style hallway bring clarity and purpose to the arrival. And throughout, we’ve taken cues from the existing house — echoing its tile-hanging, weatherboarding and brickwork in a more contemporary way.

The house will be built using BlokBuild’s off-site construction system, with Internorm triple glazing and a full suite of sustainability measures: permeable paving, rainwater harvesting, and solar panels, all designed to keep energy use low and comfort levels high.

A house that’s ready for the next generation — rooted in family, and built for the future.
